Location: Southern Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.

Postcode: 38660 Area: Located in the municipal district of Arona.

Playa de las Americas History: A purpose built holiday resort which grew up in the 1960's alongside the town of Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas has no cultural history and little of the traditional Canarian culture. Filled with flashy hotels, shopping malls and British style pubs, Playa de las Americas in places resembles a Las Vegas type resort. Neighbouring Los Cristianos was once a sleepy fishing village, but has now been caught up in the tourism revolution and has become an all year round bustling resort with countless hotels, bars and discos. Tenerife itself however has a long and interesting history, originally inhabited by a tribe known as the Guanches, it was the last of the Canary Islands to fall to the Spanish in around 1496 and later attracted settlers from Spain, Portugal, Britain, France and Italy. Tenerife appears to have been named by the people of La Palma, who called it Tinerife (White Mountain) after the huge El Teide volcano. Santa Cruz de Tenerife became the islands capital in 1821.

Overview: Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos are at the heart Tenerife tourism, with all the facilities that you would expect from a slick holiday resort. The beaches are man-made due to the dark nature of the inherent volcanic sand, and have long breakwaters to prevent the sand from being washed away, the main beaches have life-guards on duty, making them safe for families, and there are a good range of watersports facilities on offer. The Octopus Aqua Park in Playa de las Americas is open all year round and is a great place to take the kids. There are numerous shops, bars and restaurants in the resort offering something for all tastes.
